Breakfast Beats Atherosclerosis

You’ve heard it countless times: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But here’s even more reason to scramble those eggs …. new research suggests that missing your morning meal could lead to cardiovascular issues like Atherosclerosis. A study of over 4,000 participants with no cardiovascular symptoms confirmed that those who regularly skipped breakfast were more likely to suffer from hardened, narrowed arteries; yet simply opting for a quick bite doesn’t cut it either. Researchers found that those who only consumed a light breakfast ( think toast and coffee) had a higher incidence of Atherosclerosis too. The health risks didn’t stop there: people who skipped breakfast entirely were more likely to lead an unhealthy lifestyle overall, including generally poor diet, frequent alcohol consumption, and smoking. They were more likely to suffer from high blood pressure and be overweight or obese, as well.

Study Shows Chiropractic Services Relieve Low-Back Pain in Female Veterans

A new study finds that female veterans-one of the fastest growing populations receiving treatment through the Veterans Administration (VA) health care system- experience improvement in low-back pain with a course of chiropractic care, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA).

Published in the Journal of  Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, the study’s authors note that musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain are the most common ailments among female veterans. They also report that female veterans on average access VA medical care more frequently than male veterans, have a higher outpatient cost per patient and have a higher rate of service-connected disability. The study states that “although further research is warranted, chiropractic care may be of value in contributing to the pain management needs of this unique patient population.”

Curcumin Improves Memory and Mood

Lovers of Indian food, give yourself a second helping: Daily consumption of a certain form of curcumin- the substance that gives Indian curry its bright color- improved memory and mood in people with mild, age-related memory loss, according to the results of a study conducted by UCLA researchers.

The researched, published online January 19, 2018, in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, examined the effects of an easily absorbed curcumin supplement on memory performance in people without dementia, as well as curcumin’s potential impact on the microscopic plagues and tangles in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Found in tumeric, Curcumin has previously been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in lab studies. It has also been suggested as a possible reason that senior citizens in India, where curcumin is a dietary staple, have lower prevalence to Alzheimer’s disease and better cognitive performance.

A Growing Epidemic

How serious is the threat of diabetes? Nearly 1 in 3 Americans has the disease or prediabetes, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report released in July 2017.

The Report found that as of 2015,30.3 million Americans-9.4 percent of the U.S. population-had diabetes.Another 84.1 million had prediabetes,a condition that if not treated often leads to type 2 diabetes within five years.

While the report found that the rate of new diabetes diagnoses remains steady, the disease is a growing health problem. It was the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2015.

Worker’s Comp Ohio

Ohio residents with work-related injuries in most cases must try remedies like rest, physical therapy and chiropractic care before turning to spinal fusion surgery and prescription painkillers, according to a ground breaking new guideline that is partly meant to reduce the over prescribing of opiods, but this guideline isn’t settling well with everyone.

Washington,Colorado and Minnesota already restrict injured-worker payments for back surgery, officials said, but the Ohio policy, which went into effect January 1,goes further by embedding an opiod warning specifically into its surgical restriction. The state has been among the hardest hit by the overdose crisis.

At issue is a procedure in which portion of the patients spine are permanently fused to address certain conditions, including degenerative disc disease and severe chronic low-back pain. In Ohio, such surgeries are preformed about 600 times a year.

The new rule at the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, the nation’s largest state run injured-worker fund, requires an injured worker to undergo at least 60 days of alternative care-while avoiding opiod use,if possible-before resorting to spinal fusion surgery, with a few exceptions for the most severe back injuries. By including the opiod warning,it’s a more aggressive restriction than other states that also decline to pay immediately for the surgery.

Head-to-Toe Chiro for Migraines

Nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches.

In 2001, researchers at Duke University’s Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, reported that spinal manipulation resulted in improvement for headaches originating in the neck.  For tension headaches, Chiropractic adjustments offer a longer period of relief, with fewer side effects, than a commonly prescribed medication.

In 2000, Tuchin et al conducted a randomized control trial of Chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy showed significant improvement in migraine frequency, duration, disability, and medication use.The results were published in The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.

Preventing Cancer with Food

A study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry lends further support to the already compelling evidence that a medicinal ingredient found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, cauliflower,Bok choy,Brussels sprouts, turnips) exerts significant anti-cancer effects.

This study showed that sulforaphane exerted a key epigenetic effect that greatly inhibited human prostate cancer cells from forming colonies. But many other cancers are linked to the same epigenetic switch, suggesting that sulforaphane may also provide protection against brain, lung, colon, breast, and stomach cancer,as well as chronic lymphocytic lukemia.

The Cifuentes,Willets, and Wasiak Study

The Cifuentes,Willets, and Wasiak Study (2011) concluded that chiropractic care, during the health-maintenance care period, resulted in:

  • 24% decrease in disability duration of first episode compared to physical therapy.
  • 250% decrease in disability duration of first episode compared to medical physician’s care.
  • 5.9% decrease in opioid (narcotic) use during maintenance care with physical therapy.
  • 30.3% decrease in opioid (narcotic) use during maintenance care with medical physician’s care.
  • 32% decrease in average weekly cost of medical expenses during disability episode compared to physical therapy care.
  • 21% decrease in average weekly cost of medical expenses during disability episode compared to medical physician’s care.

Rubio not saying much about opioids law

Senator co-sponsored bill that hindered DEA

Washington- Marco Rubio isn’t saying much about his role in passage of a controversial law that former Drug Enforcement Agency officials said tied their hands from cracking down on drug distribution companies that sent millions of opioids to corrupt doctors and internet pharmacies.

The Florida Republican was one of four senators (three Republicans and one Democrat) to co-sponsor the legislation written by Utah Republican Orrin Hatch,Known as the Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act of 2016.

A report by The Washington Post/60 Minutes Sunday interviewed a number of DEA officials who said the measure authored by Hatch in the Senate and Pennsylvania Republican Tom Morino makes it harder for the DEA to halt drug shipments that posed an “immediate danger” to the community.

The bill passed without opposition in both chambers .

New research on probiotics in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer

In an innovative approach to colorectal cancer prevention and treatment, scientist are studying ways to replace missing metabolites in patients prone to gut inflammation and CRC. A new study in The American Journal of Pathology describes how administration of histamine-producing gut microbes to mice lacking the enzyme histidine decarboxylase (HDC) reduced inflammation and tumor formation. These results suggest that alteration of the gut microbiome with probiotics may become a new preventive or theraputic strategy for patients at risk for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-associated CRC.

“We are on the cusp of harnessing advances in microbiome science to facilitate diagnosis and treatment of human disease,”explains James Versalovic,MD,PhD,pathologist-in-chief at Texas Childrens Hospital, and Milton J. Finegold professor of pathology and immunology at Baylor College of Medicine(Houston).”By simply introducing mirobes that provide missing life substances,we can reduce the risk of cancer and supplement diet-based cancer prevention strategies.”

Sugar study is small win in cancer fight

Belgian Scientist say they’ve made research breakthrough in the relationship between sugar and cancer.

Researchers found that yeast with high levels of sugar known as glucose overstimulated the same proteins often found mutated inside human tumors, making cell grow faster. The finding, published in Nature Communications on Friday, aims to shed light on how cancer develops.

John Thevelein,Wim Versees and Veerle Janssens started researching sugar’s link to caner in 2008 to try and better understand what’s called Warburg effect, when tumor cells make energy through a rapid breakdown of glucose not seen in normal cells. That energy fuels tumor growth.

The research “is able to explain the coloration between the strength of the Warburg effect and tumor aggressiveness,” Thevelein, from KU Leuven in Belgium, said in a release.

The finding is not a medical breakthrough, and it doesn’t prove that eating a low-sugar diet could change a cancer diagnosis.

“The findings are not sufficient to identify the primary cause of the Warburg effect,”Thevelein said in a release.”Further research is needed.”

Victoria Stevens, a cancer researcher with the American Cancer Society who was not involved in the study, said this research is great, but it comments on only “about one product made during the breakdown of glucose to produce energy.”In other words,it’s a small step in a long process.

Brilliant Botanicals

Recommending an adaptogen can be the perfect answer for your patients dealing with physical and mental stress. Adaptogens, a class of herbs that help the body adapt to stress, include many botanicals like ashwaghanda and rhodiola that are safe, natural, and backed by clinical research. While adaptogens have been used medicinally for thousands of years, we are still learning about these unique medicinal plants. Most experts agree that the effects of adaptogens involve the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, inflammation,  and various gene pathways. Adaptogens not only affect the perception or qualities of mental stress they bolster physical endurance and recovery as well.

Naturally Effective CBD Topicals

CBD is emerging as one of the most exciting natural alternatives used to treat a wide range of common conditions, and for good reason. CBD is the major non- psychoactive component of Cannabis Sativa. Cannabinoids are anti-inflammatory,analgesic,anti-spasmodic,and they enhance circulation and cellular regeneration. CBD is used to treat a number of common conditions, including chronic pain, inflammation, seizures, insomnia, spasms, multiple sclerosis, and mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. As a topical agent, CBD oil can be directly applied to certain areas of the body as an effective means of relieving pain and soreness, reducing inflammation, and soothing inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema. As CBD oil is non-psychoactive, applying it to the skin does not create mind-altering effects in the same manner that THC ingestion does.

Things Every DC Should Know About Energy Drinks

The popularity of energy drinks is on the rise with adolescents and adults, with consumption rates highest among males 18-34 years of age.The energy drink industry generates astonishing revenues, with 2014 sales reaching nearly $50 billion worldwide. There is some evidence pointing to harmful physiological and psychological effects from energy drink consumption. For instance, the caffeine mixed with other ingredients may produce symptoms such as insomnia, hyperactivity, rebound anxiety and risk-taking behaviors.

What Is an “Energy Drink”?

Energy drinks are non-alcoholic beverages containing B vitamins, caffeine in concentrations similar to strong coffee, a variety of herbal ingredients that can have both stimulant and anti-anxiety properties, and often large amounts of sugar. An energy drink typically contains large amounts of caffeine, added sugars, other additives, and stimulants such as guarna, taurine, and L carnitine. These stimulants can increase alertness, attention and energy,as well as increase blood pressure, heart rate and breathing.Adverse effects related to caffeine include tachycardia, arrhythmia, increase blood pressure, anxiety, headache, insomnia, and nausea.

Why sleeping position matters.

How do you feel when you wake up in the mornings?Refreshed, rested, and ready to go? Or stiff, achy, and wishing you could go back to sleep for another few hours? The difference may depend on your sleeping position.

Sleeping on your back

Most experts agree that sleeping on your back is the ideal position, but it’s not for everyone. When you sleep on your back you stretch your body out evenly on the mattress.Your head, neck, and spine are aligned in a neutral position-there’s no extra stress on on any part of your body.As a chiropractor,I recommend back sleeping, because it put the least amount of pressure on the vertebrae and discs of the spine.

If you have acid reflux, lying  on your back with your head elevated a bit by your pillow is a good way to keep acid from coming up.If you already snore, laying on your back makes it louder. This is the most likely to trigger “Honey, roll over” from your bed partner. It’s also the worst position for sleep apnea,a sleep disorder that makes your breathing repeatedly stop and then start again, sometimes with a loud snorting or choking sound, usually because the throat muscles relax during sleep and block the trachea.

Sleeping on your side

The side position, with your torso straight and legs stretched, keeps your spine elongated and unstressed. If you tend to wake up with neck and back pain, try this position-after a few days, you’ll notice a positive change in how you feel in the morning. Its also a good choice if you snore or have sleep  apnea, because it helps keep your airway open.If you have acid reflux, sleeping on your side keeps the acid from coming up.

The fetal position

Curling up on your side, much as babies and small children,is perhaps the idea sleeping position. With your torso and legs bent, you’re putting as little stress as possible on your spine while you sleep.Put a pillow between your knees to reduce the risk of lower back pain or stiffness.

Sleeping on your stomach

This position puts a lot of pressure on the back and neck.Because you have to turn your head to one side to breath, your likely to wake up with a stiff and sore neck and shoulder muscles; you might even wake with numbness and tingling in your arms.

Choosing the right pillow

Your bed pillow is critically important for supporting your head and neck aligned while you sleep. Choose a pillow that matches your favorite sleeping position.Nevertheless, good sleep position won’t make up for a bad mattress.Anecdotal reports from patients that suggest the ideal mattress is made of memory foam.A memory foam mattress contours to the spine’s natural curves and distributes body weight evenly. With no pressure points or sags, memory foam mattresses promote comfortable sleep through the night.
