Trouble sleeping? Or maybe waking up in the morning with incredible pain. The problem just might be your mattress. Recently Sleep Researchers have agreed that mattress’s and pillows are very important factors in getting a good nights rest. If a mattress is not structurally sound it can affect the skeletal integrity of the sleeper. If a mattress fails to provide adequate pressure relief it will cause pain and rob a person of a good, deep, and healing level sleep. Also a mattress that is constructed of cheap materials can release toxic fumes that can affect a persons respiratory system and other vital functions of the human body.


Mattress and Pillow vendors can be sought out that are willing to make known the materials  they use in their products. 2) Stretch!  Just take a few minutes and roll your shoulders back slowly. Also try rotating your neck slowly clockwise and then counter clockwise. These simple stretches can instantly loosen stiff muscles and help you to relax.

3) Cry! Emotional tears release chemicals that can help elevate your mood and get rid of stress.

More gain, More pain?


A recent study showed a correlation between people who have more weight have more pain. People who are overweight tend to have illness’s such as type 2 diabetes, arthritis, high cholesterol, depression, and back pain. However, the study showed that people who are overweight tend to experience more pain than people of average weight, whether or not they are suffering from an illness. The results of the study showed that people with a body mass index between 25 and 29 experienced 20% more pain than people of average weight. It also showed that people with a BMI between 30 and 34 experienced 68% more pain. The higher the BMI’s were,  the more pain there was experienced by the  individuals.

Shorter Days…Don’t Forget the Vitamin D

Colder, shorter days mean less time outside in the sun, causing a spike in vitamin D deficiencies. Many health care professionals believe that the rise in colds and flu during the winter is due, not to the cool weather, but the lack vitamin D. As a supporter of so many health functions, it would be easier to name the things that aren’t helped by vitamin D.Image

We know that vitamin D is important for bone health and for supporting a healthy immune system. Vitamin D also has remarkable benefits for heart health, increasing flexibility of arteries and improving blood flow. The American Journal of Hypertension published a study showing that people with low vitamin D levels had a greater chance of having high blood pressure. In addition, people who maintain good vitamin D levels have a sharper memory and experience a slower aging process, beginning at a cellular level.

Just be sure you take the more active vitamin D3 form, rather than vitamin D2, which is often used in supplements.

How Safe is a Mammogram?

The yearly mammogram you get to screen for breast cancer may actually trigger breast cancer. Hard to believe?  The concentrated radiation delivered to the breasts may work to “switch on” the gene for cancer. are mammograms safe?

New research concluded that “exposure to diagnostic  radiation before age 30 was associated with an increased breast cancer risk in  BRCA1/2 mutation carriers.” Researchers recommend non-ionizing radiation imaging  techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), for those with a family history of cancer.

Got (Organic) Milk?

All mammals get nutritious milk from their mothers when they’re born. Humans grow up and swap nutrient-rich breast milk for cow’s milk.  As growing children, we are encouraged to drink our milk for the calcium, with the hopes of building strong bones and later preventing osteoporosis. Our life long devotion to milk can be problematic to our health because milk contains bacteria, antibiotics, and pesticides. “A 1988 FDA survey of milk samples from grocery stores in 10 cities found that 73% of the samples contained pesticide residues.” Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1991; 47got organic milk?

A high percentage of cows are infected with viruses, bacteria and other harmful toxins, which can make for unhealthy milk. Cows are commonly injected with harmful growth hormones to stimulate milk production, and elevated amounts of these have been associated with cancer in humans. We already eat the meat that comes from these animals, so by drinking their milk, we’re getting a double dose of these potentially harmful toxins.

The protein that milk provides has been shown to inhibit calcium absorption and has actually been shown to be hard to digest. Milk is also mucus producing and a common link to childhood allergies, sinus infections/congestion, skin problems, ear infections, diabetes, worsening arthritis symptoms and heart disease. As a milk substitute, I like organic rice or almond milk.

It’s true- we do need calcium. What are some other ways to get it? Try increasing your intake of high quality calcium-rich foods, like leafy green vegetables (kale, collard greens, broccoli) or add mackerel, sardines, navy beans, hazelnut and sesame seeds to your diet. Get sunshine because it gives you vitamin D, which aids in absorbing calcium. Try decreasing foods that block calcium absorption, like soda.

The bottom line when it comes to milk‒ even if you have to pay more, it’ll be worth it for both you and your family in the long run to go organic. Milk may not be as crucial to our health or strong bones as a balanced diet of good quality, chemical-free food.
